British actor Julian Sands is reported to have disappeared after walking in the mountains north of Los Angeles.

He disappeared last Friday in the Baldi Powell area during bad weather in the San Gabriel Mountains. Ground rescue teams abandoned the weekend search due to avalanche hazards, but continued with a drone and helicopter, police said. Mr. Sands, 65, is best known for his roles in popular films and TV dramas including A Room With A View, 24 and Smallville. For weeks, California was hit by deadly storms and a disaster declaration was made by President Joe Biden. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said that when conditions are safer for rescue crews, they will resume the search. She said she had responded to 14 calls on Mount San Antonio, known locally as Mount Baldi, and in the surrounding area over the past four weeks. She warned hikers not to "stay away" from the area.

"It's very dangerous and even experienced hikers are having problems," the department said. They are also looking for another park, an American, lost in the same mountains. Last week, a mother of four described by friends as an experienced hiker died after gliding more than 500 feet down Mount Balde.

Mr. Sands was reported missing at approximately 19:30 local time on Friday, January 13. The department's search and rescue crews responded and began searching, but severe weather warnings and tracking conditions hampered this. "However, we continue to search by helicopter and drone when weather conditions permit," the statement said. Mr. Sands has spoken in the past about his love of hiking and mountaineering. When asked in a 2020 interview with The Guardian what made him happy, he replied: "Near the top of a mountain in a glorious cold peak." Born in Yorkshire, Mr Sands appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, but was a major role in the 1985 British romantic film A Room With A View which brought him worldwide fame.

He recently appeared in the drama Benediction, which also starred Peter Capaldi. Mr. Sands lives in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles with his wife and they have three children.
